What does the Ford Performance Drift Stick do?

Lately, when we’ve mentioned new and exciting additions to performance accessories customers can choose, they have almost exclusively been for the 2018 Ford Mustang. However, with the Specialty Equipment Manufacturer’s Association show underway in Las Vegas, the Ford Focus RS ‘hot hatch’ is getting some love. Not only has the high-performance model of the Focus platform taken home one of SEMA’s most coveted awards, but Ford also took the opportunity to show off its all-new Ford Performance Drift Stick. This innovative piece of equipment will make it easier for people to drift like, Ken Block, who also worked closely with the manufacturer to develop this new technology.

“The passionate engineers at Ford Performance are also enthusiasts,” Dave Pericak, global director, Ford Performance said in a press release. “Everyone here is encouraged to think outside the box, so project ‘Wicked Stick’ was born. Our engineers will leverage the learnings from its development for many future products for Ford Performance and, ultimately, take back even more of an innovative spirit when they rejoin our mainstream engineering teams.”

How does it the Ford drift stick work?

An important reason professional drivers – like Block – are able to get their cars to do such amazing things, is that they have mastered how to use hydraulic handbrakes. For the amateur drift racers out there, hydraulic brakes present several challenges. Primarily, they are difficult to install; not to mention difficult to master because of how much effort it takes to properly engage them. The Ford Performance Drift Stick requires very little fabrication to install and is electrically-powered, making it infinitely easier to use. Best of all, installing, or having it installed, will not void the manufacturer’s warranty for the Ford Focus RS.

Bringing home the gold

For the second consecutive year and for the third time overall, the Ford Focus ST and RS performance trim grades has received the top prize from the SEMA show. Because of the customizable nature of the Ford Focus, the SEMA judges have chosen to recognize the importance of aftermarket parts to the Focus community.
